Swipe to unlock; draw a doodle or simply touch the home button. This is as far as we would go. For the spoiled users accustomed to the ‘-friendly’ design, anything beyond this level of convenience is a waste of time and effort. As a basic principle of interaction design, our devices must respond instantly when summoned and serve our needs (avoiding eye contact with people in the subway included) in the most efficient way. Heaven forfend designers mess with that principle.
But as our gizmos and gadgets are getting more and more ‘smart’ — before they take over and leave us unencumbered by the responsibility of interacting with them once and for all — we might need to reconsider the very notion of human-centered interaction design. This project is a speculation in that regard.
